Reviews and Community

Sun Oct 23, 2005, 5:11 AM
Reviews.

They aren't hard.

They encourage people to keep going, because believe it or not, we get NOTHING else out of this. Quite often, all it takes is less than a minute to change a review of "Great, morekthnxbai!" into "Hey, I really like this. I liked the last line, it really made the story for me".

Sure, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. If you have something helpful to say, say it! If you liked it, for god's sake, tell the writer/artist, because they need to hear it.

No, I'm not perfect. I slack off reviewing a lot. But I try to give decent reviews when I see something I like. I try to explain what I liked. I try to explain what didn't sit right with me.

The more you comment, the more others will be inspired to comment. Believe me, I know. The more you comment, the more the artist/writer will feel like someone is appreciating what they're doing and do it more.

Yeah, there are reasons not to. RL can be a pain in the butt and keep you from doing the things you should for your fandom. But communities need to get more pro-active.

Today I'm making a commitment. If I read something and like it, I will tell the author if I can. If I see a piece of art and like it, I will tell the artist. I will leave helpful and constructive comments where possible. Even if I am not arty, or not a good writer, or feel I don't know anything about the technicalities, I will not leave stock standard replies of "I love it" or "morethnx".

Make this commitment. Community needs communication.

Pass on the word, won't you?

Since I like this rant I WILL COMMENT. It's totally true, and good comments (like the one you gave me that brought me here) let the artist or writer know that the commentor actually took time to look at the work and think about it long enough to say something ABOUT it. I think the most depressing comments are "nice" or "cool." Even a harsh critique is better than "cool.", because at least it doesn't sound like a botter comment. I always always try to leave comments mentioning something I liked or something exceptionally well-done, and I hope lots of people read this journal and learn something from it. ;/

I odn't have many people interested in my stuff, here or on LJ, so I'm relying on people taking this, copying and reposting it or linking back to one of my journals to spread it.

I want this spread. I want people to wake up and say "Y'know, I have been a bum. I should fix that."

Forgive. Forget...

But keep a list of names.

I definitely agree with you. I hope more people in the community follow your example! It's always nice to get comments with more depth to them than some of those one-word comments out there (though it's all right to get those too ^^). I usually try to make comments that explain what I like best about something or offer something pertinent.
As soon as I update my journal I'll post a link to this. Maybe it will help. :)

Thanks... I'm asking everyone who reads it to pass it on. I try to be helpful, because I know how it feels to slave on a piece and get nothing.

Here's hoping we can pass it on.

The submission agreement for DeviantArt states that they can use your name and all of your material for whatever they like, including selling it for themselves, and they can change it however they like! x__x

I make comment now, MONTHS later, (heh) ---->*blames WoW*<----- just to support your point. I should leave more comments/reviews of people's stuff; I've just been eaten whole by World of Warcraft of late, so the occasional thing I DO read sort of gets missed for serious comment as I rush back to WoW. :(

Go you! Make em leave some sort of indication that they've read and enjoyed/cried at/disliked/chewed on your hard-wrought literary creations. Otherwise I'll buy them a copy of WoW, and they'll never be seen again.......

You are such an addict. A lot of people have commented that you don't have time for anything but WoW online. ^_~

Like who!? ha! I rarely contact anyone online these days....plus Grat, Dawn, Mel and Nic are all WoWers too, and in the guild, lol.

But it has eaten up most of my free time, 'tis my hobby. You have your writing and Sages, I have WoW. It's what I do in place of creativity. o.O

I'd be surprised if more than 2 ppl had *actually* missed me online, you perhaps being one of them. I'm just not much able to find many people online that I can talk with for long, as it seems much of my social interaction has become a running 'in' joke, from being at Gwiz too often.....*shrug*
